This Really Happened: "I Don't Like Orientals or Blacks"

This really happened, Thursday evening in the newsroom (with little to no interpretation):

"Ring ring"

KSPR Producer: "KSPR News"

Guy: "blah blah...That weather guy you've got is top notch... blah blah... There are too many Orientals and blacks on TV...blah blah...and I really hate women giving the news. But that Oriental lady you have on now--I can understand everything she says."

KSPR Producer: "Thanks for calling."

I think that was supposed to be a compliment??

My producer was upset when he told me this...but I thought it was kind of funny. I joked, "Next time someone says something like that, tell them they better watch it or I'll come to their house and karate chop them... and then eat their dog."

The sad thing is I would want to believe that caller wasn't being serious...but I've lived here enough to know that whoever it was probably wasn't kidding.

WOW! Further evidence of why the Ozarks drives me crazy sometimes. The sad part is that he really thought he was giving a compliment. In his own backward, I'm-a-hillbilly way, he was, but good Lord — that type of ignorance has really bothered me for several months for some reason.

Funny enough, Springfield doesn't even have a black person on air.

Hahaha - LOL. Springfield. Good grief. I understand well by now that these people are out there thinking this stuff, but what in the world compels them to pick up the phone and say these things out loud?

I love your sense of humor. Living in N.C. really helps with the practice of ignoring idiots. I run into one on a daily basis.

Wow, a testament on how Springfield is progressing. I see this nearly everyday, live and in person when making my rounds around S.W, Mo.

As the producer who took the phone call, I'd like to make a minor correction. The caller referenced Michelle as "this little oriental girl." I'm pleased Michelle is able to let these things roll off her back. I'm still bugged by the ignorance of this man who actually thought he was paying a compliment.

This is why you're so great - responding with humour (Canadian spelling of "humor"!). That is always the best way to do it - and easier said than done...xo.
